SFGATE: Giants’ Panik does it again in another 1-0 victory over Dodgers

Giants’ Panik does it again in another 1-0 victory over Dodgers" Published on March 31, 2018 at 10:52AM by By Henry Schulman LOS ANGELES — A half-dozen Giants stood in a circle around a team official staring at a cell phone. They were not watching cat videos on YouTube or monitoring the Tokyo stock exchange. They were examining a tweet from Stats Inc. that said second baseman Joe Panik just accomplished something with roughly the same statistical probability of a pterodactyl traveling to the 21st century and winning Wimbledon. Until Friday night, no major-league team had won back-to-back 1-0 games with the same player hitting a home run in each. Panik’s homer against Clayton Kershaw in the season opener was special.

SFGATE: Giants, Posey pass first test of new mound-visit rule

Giants, Posey pass first test of new mound-visit rule" Published on March 31, 2018 at 07:47AM by By Henry Schulman LOS ANGELES — Thursday’s season opener provided the Giants a good test for adapting to the new rule limiting mound visits to six for a nine-inning game. They had to navigate a game that was 0-0 or 1-0 throughout, with all five pitchers getting into some sort of trouble. Pitching coach Curt Young did not leave the dugout, but would have had Cory Gearrin lost one more batter. Buster Posey visited the mound four times, twice to see Gearrin in the seventh inning. The Giants ended the game with two visits remaining. Having a catcher as seasoned as Posey, who has spent so much time with the majority of the pitchers, could give the Giants an edge.

SFGATE: Most direct line yet drawn between the Trump campaign, Russia

Most direct line yet drawn between the Trump campaign, Russia" Published on March 28, 2018 at 06:55PM by Aaron Blake, The Washington Post Special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation just drew what appears to be its most direct line to date between President Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia. That line is drawn in a new court filing related to the upcoming sentencing of London attorney Alex van der Zwaan. Van der Zwaan has pleaded guilty to lying about his contacts with deputy Trump campaign manager Rick Gates and a person not named in the document, Person A. Person A appears to be a former Ukraine-based aide to Gates and Paul Manafort named Konstantin Kilimnik. Here's the paragraph: "Fourth, the lies and withholding of documents were material to the Special Counsel's Office's investigation.

SFGATE: Tesla says crashed vehicle was on autopilot at time of accident

Tesla says crashed vehicle was on autopilot at time of accident" Published on March 31, 2018 at 08:52AM by Tim Smith and Dana Hull, Bloomberg (Bloomberg) -- Tesla Inc. said computer logs of the Model X vehicle involved in a fatal crash a week ago showed the driver didn’t have his hands on the steering wheel for six seconds before the accident. Wei Huang, 38, died March 23 when his vehicle hit a highway barrier in California and caught fire. The damage to the vehicle was exacerbated by a safety bulwark that hadn’t been replaced after a prior accident, the company wrote in a blog post published March 30. “The driver had received several visual and one audible hands-on warning earlier in the drive,” Tesla said.

SFGATE: Giants’ Panik does it again in another 1-0 win over Dodgers

Giants’ Panik does it again in another 1-0 win over Dodgers" Published on March 31, 2018 at 10:52AM by By Henry Schulman LOS ANGELES - On a crisp spring Friday evening at Dodger Stadium, Johnny Cueto dressed in a Giants uniform for his first regular-season game since he decided in November that he would wear it for the next four seasons. What proved to be a wise financial choice for Cueto could become a boon on the field for the Giants, if Cueto's effort against the Dodgers was at all a forecast for 2018. Cueto carried a perfect game into the seventh inning of the Giants' second straight 1-0 victory made possible - for the second straight day -- by a Joe Panik home run.

Giants pregame: Why Blach went five, relievers who whiff, lineups" Published on March 31, 2018 at 07:01AM by By Henry Schulman LOS ANGELES - Ty Blach had thrown five shutout innings, allowed three singles and faced just one Dodger for the third time, Chris Taylor to end the fifth. With the Giants leading 1-0, manager Bruce Bochy went straight to his bullpen and used four relievers to complete the Opening Day victory. Asked if he pulled Blach under the newthink about pitchers facing hitters just twice, Bochy said, "No, no, no. It had nothing to do with philosophy. He hadn't pitched in a while." Blach was up to 81 pitches. He had not gone farther than that in spring training and had not pitched at all in a week. Across the country in Atlanta, Phillies starter Aaron Nola had a 5-0 lead in the sixth inning.

White House reportedly unhappy with EPA chief Scott Pruitt" Published on March 30, 2018 at 10:08PM by Jennifer A. Dlouhy and Jennifer Jacobs, Bloomberg (Bloomberg) -- Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt leased a Washington apartment owned by a lobbyist friend last year under terms that allowed him to pay $50 a night for a single bedroom -- but only on the nights when he actually slept there. White House officials are growing dismayed about the questions surrounding Pruitt’s living arrangement, including his initial inability to produce any documentation about the lease or his actual payments, according to three officials. The landlord provided EPA officials with a copy of the lease and proof of the payments Pruitt made. In all, Pruitt paid $6,100 to use the room for roughly six months, according to copies of rental checks reviewed by Bloomberg News.

SFGATE: Giants blank Dodgers on Opening Day, win on Joe Panik home run

Giants blank Dodgers on Opening Day, win on Joe Panik home run" Published on March 30, 2018 at 10:01AM by By Henry Schulman LOS ANGELES — Two days before the Giants beat Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers 1-0 in Thursday’s season opener, surely costing some bettors a few shekels, they held an unusual players-only meeting at AT&T Park ahead of the final exhibition game. Usually the manager takes the floor to fire up his team before Opening Day and the players nod. But Bruce Bochy challenged his older group to take ownership of what happens in 2018, and the meeting provided evidence the players took him seriously. “We just felt we had a group that left something on the table last year,” Buster Posey said. “We wanted to make sure we know where we stand, what we expect. Talk is great, but we’ve got to go out and do it.

Giants’ Bochy names Hunter Strickland closer in Melancon’s absence" Published on March 30, 2018 at 09:21AM by By Henry Schulman LOS ANGELES - Opening Day was not a happy time in one corner of the Giants clubhouse Thursday. There, closer Mark Melancon glumly explained that the flexor strain in his elbow that landed him on the 10-day disabled list has bothered him all spring and now prevents him from throwing even 30 feet without discomfort. Melancon's hopes of being a healthy and successful closer after surgery in September to repair a longstanding pronator injury, and making good on his four-year, $62 million contract, have vaporized. "It's just been a long year, a long calendar year, thinking that I'd be having plenty of time to get back to Opening Day today," Melancon said. "Not being available today is rough.
