LOS ANGELES - Ty Blach had thrown five shutout innings, allowed three singles and faced just one Dodger for the third time, Chris Taylor to end the fifth. With the Giants leading 1-0, manager Bruce Bochy went straight to his bullpen and used four relievers to complete the Opening Day victory. Asked if he pulled Blach under the newthink about pitchers facing hitters just twice, Bochy said, "No, no, no. It had nothing to do with philosophy. He hadn't pitched in a while." Blach was up to 81 pitches. He had not gone farther than that in spring training and had not pitched at all in a week. Across the country in Atlanta, Phillies starter Aaron Nola had a 5-0 lead in the sixth inning.
