SFGATE: Credit card technology transition is trying for travelers

Credit card technology transition is trying for travelers" Published on February 26, 2019 at 10:28PM by Chris McGinnis When traveling in other countries, I frequently feel a little behind the times when it comes to paying with credit cards. I watch Europeans in sidewalk cafes pay for their drinks and meals almost effortlessly when waiters insert their credit cards into small mobile EMV processors, then ask customers to input their PIN number and/or a tip. Lately. I've seen them "tap to pay" at these terminals. Easy breezy! When I try to do that with my U.S-issued credit card, it's a problem. Waiters have to take the time to print out a tiny, curled up receipt and ask me to sign it. Whyyyy?

SFGATE: House OKs Dem bill blocking Trump emergency on wall

House OKs Dem bill blocking Trump emergency on wall" Published on February 27, 2019 at 11:49AM by By ALAN FRAM and ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats ignored a veto threat and rammed legislation through the House Tuesday that would stymie President Donald Trump's bid for billions of extra dollars for his border wall, escalating a clash over whether he was abusing his powers to advance his paramount campaign pledge. The House's 245-182 vote to block Trump's national emergency declaration fell well below the two-thirds majority that would be needed to override his promised veto. Top Republicans worked to keep defections as low as possible — 13 backed the Democrats' resolution — underscoring their desire to avoid a tally suggesting that Trump's hold on lawmakers was weakening.

Fed's Powell predicts solid but slower growth in 2019" Published on February 27, 2019 at 03:27AM by By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell says the U.S. economy should keep expanding at a solid, though somewhat slower pace this year. But he warns of growing risks, including a global slowdown, volatile financial markets and uncertainty about U.S. trade policy. In delivering the Fed's semiannual monetary report to Congress, Powell says the Fed will be "patient" in determining when to boost its benchmark policy rate in light of the various "crosscurrents and conflicting signals." He says the Fed's rate decisions will be "data dependent" as the economic outlook evolves. The Fed in December indicated it could hike rates two times this year.
