SFGATE: Drake appears to confirm rumors of son on album

Drake appears to confirm rumors of son on album" Published on June 29, 2018 at 09:08PM by LOS ANGELES (AP) — On his new album, Drake appears to confirm he is a father. The 31-year-old rapper from Canada released "Scorpion" on Friday. In two songs on his fifth album, he seems to address rumors that he fathered a son with a former French adult-film star. In "Emotionless," Drake raps, "I wasn't hiding my kid from the world, I was hiding the world from my kid." In "March 14," he uses a Michael Jackson reference to say, "She not my lover like Billie Jean, but the kid is mine." The 25-track album features the singles "God's Plan" and "Nice For What." The album follows "More Life" from 2017. Jay Z, Future, Static Major and Ty Dolla Sign are among the artists who appear on the new album. He also samples Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey.

SFGATE: Canada announces billions in retaliatory tariffs against US

Canada announces billions in retaliatory tariffs against US" Published on June 30, 2018 at 08:16AM by By ROB GILLIES, Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — Canada announced billions of dollars in retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. on Friday in a tit for tat response to the Trump administration's duties on Canadian steel and aluminum. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government released the final list of items that will be targeted beginning July 1. Some items will be subject to taxes of 10 or 25 percent.   "We will not escalate and we will not back down," Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said. The taxes on items including ketchup, lawn mowers and motor boats amount to $12.6 billion. "This is a perfectly reciprocal action," Freeland said. "It is a dollar for dollar response." Freeland said they had no other choice and called the tariffs regrettable.

Jahi McMath, declared brain-dead in 2013, has died" Published on June 29, 2018 at 09:40AM by By Rachel Swan The teenager at the center of an impassioned debate over how to define death has died, according to her family’s lawyer. More than four years have passed since something went wrong after 13-year-old Jahi McMath underwent throat surgery at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland. Jahi initially seemed fine after the procedure, then blood began gushing from her mouth and nose. Later she went into cardiac arrest and was declared brain-dead. Refusing to accept that pronouncement, Jahi’s family kept her on life support in New Jersey, which makes exemptions for death determinations that violate religious beliefs.

SFGATE: 'Not what was expected': Trump's tax bill losing popularity

'Not what was expected': Trump's tax bill losing popularity" Published on June 30, 2018 at 01:40AM by Heather Long, The Washington Post In a packed arena in Fargo, North Dakota, this week, President Donald Trump's most ardent supporters roared with approval when he talked about protecting the U.S. borders, beating the Democrats and "respect for our great, beautiful, wonderful American flag." When Trump pivoted to the tax bill, his top legislative accomplishment, the crowd clapped - but without the fervor they had shown for many of his other applause lines. Trump signed the tax cut legislation just before Christmas. Six months later, it is losing popularity. American families are unsure whether they are benefiting from the tax cut, and small businesses say they are confused by the complex changes affecting them.

One will stay, and the clubhouse leader has to be 25-year-old rookie Andrew Suarez. Suarez has the stuff, strike-zone consistency and gumption to pitch every fifth day and win more than he loses, assuming the Giants find a way to score some runs for him. Suarez, facing the team that beat him in his April 11 major-league debut, held the Diamondbacks to one run in six innings and earned the win in a 2-1 Giants victory at Chase Field.

SFGATE: Giants beat first-place D’backs behind rookies Suarez, Slater

Giants beat first-place D’backs behind rookies Suarez, Slater" Published on June 30, 2018 at 11:35AM by By Henry Schulman PHOENIX — Will Smith’s first major-league save in 2014 was memorable because he had no idea he earned one. He faced one hitter, Pittsburgh’s Pedro Alvarez, and struck him out after Milwaukee starter Kyle Lohse dominated for 82/3 innings. “Everyone was congratulating me, and I’m going, for what?” Smith said Friday night after his second career save. He threw a perfect ninth in an important 2-1 victory against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Beating the first-place team in the division to gain a game in the standings, on the road, is big enough. Friday’s circumstances made it feel bigger.

SFGATE: Would Giants’ Samardzija make a good closer?

Would Giants’ Samardzija make a good closer?" Published on June 30, 2018 at 08:49AM by By Henry Schulman PHOENIX — Anytime the Giants fall into a ninth-inning “crisis,” Jeff Samardzija’s name arises as a potential closer. The idea has its appeal. He throws hard, and when healthy last year he threw strikes. Looking deeper, the issue that persuaded the Giants to have Samardzija make a fourth rehab start Monday makes him less suited to short relief: Samardzija is not a good first-inning pitcher. A closer has to charge out of the chute. “He knows that’s an area where he’s got to come out letting it go because that’s something that can determine the game,” manager Bruce Bochy said Friday. In 2017, Samardzija’s first-inning ERA was 6.47, the worst of any inning.

SFGATE: Giants must take advantage of their shot against first-place D’backs

Giants must take advantage of their shot against first-place D’backs" Published on June 30, 2018 at 02:37AM by By Henry Schulman PHOENIX - Lookee here. The National League West is not so bad after all. The division-leading Diamondbacks carry a .580 winning percentage into Friday night's game against the Giants, not much different than the Central-leading Brewers (.588) and East-leading Braves (.570). All three divisions have three winning teams. Also, look at the league's June win-percentage leaderboard: 1. Arizona, 19-7, .731 2. Los Angeles, 17-7, .708 3. San Francisco, 16-10, .615 Since June featured a lot of inter-division competition, one can argue the West is best and cleaned up against inferior teams in the other divisions.

Wikipedia article of the day for June 30, 2018

The Wikipedia article of the day for June 30, 2018 is More Hall Annex . The More Hall Annex was a nuclear research building on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Built in 1961, it housed a small research reactor until June 30, 1988, operating at a peak of 100 kilowatts thermal (kWt), and was decommissioned in 2007. The building was designed in the Brutalist architectural style by UW faculty members, using reinforced concrete walls. Large windows overlooking the reactor room allowed observation from the outside, in an attempt to demonstrate the safety of nuclear energy. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, after a campaign led by an architecture student in response to a demolition proposal from the university. Despite a lawsuit from preservation groups and the City of Seattle, the university began demolition of the building in July 2016. It will be replaced by a new computer science building that is expected to open

"Left Out" -- The Discovery Files

"Left Out" -- The Discovery Files New research counters a long-standing model of emotion in the brain, and shows that emotions like alertness and determination are housed in the right side of the brains of left-handed people. SFGATE: Bruce Bochy says Giants’ Gorkys Hernandez merits All-Star consideration

Bruce Bochy says Giants’ Gorkys Hernandez merits All-Star consideration" Published on June 29, 2018 at 10:21AM by By John Shea It’s a shocking thought considering Gorkys Hernandez wasn’t guaranteed an Opening Day roster spot, but manager Bruce Bochy said the center fielder should be in the All-Star conversation. “I think he’s going to be considered this year,” Bochy said Thursday. “You look at the home runs, he’s in double figures now. And the way he’s been playing, you never know.” Bochy suggested the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts, who will manage the National League All-Stars, will be impressed with Hernandez’s numbers when it’s time to pick the reserves. “You look at the outfield,” Bochy said, “there’s not a lot of guys having huge years out there, so he’s going to get considered.

SFGATE: Giants blow lead in ninth, miss chance to sweep Rockies

Giants blow lead in ninth, miss chance to sweep Rockies" Published on June 29, 2018 at 10:01AM by By John Shea Ninety-eight losses one year, a division race the next. The Giants would be cool with that. That’s their hope for the season’s second half, which began Thursday afternoon with a bummer of a 9-8 loss to the Rockies, a game that was decided in the ninth inning when Sam Dyson’s two-seam fastball was clobbered over the left-center fence by DJ LeMahieu. Despite the disturbing ending to an otherwise solid 7-3 homestand, the Giants felt good heading to Arizona to face the first-place Diamondbacks. It’s as good a time as any to cut into a 5½-game deficit. “Any time you play an NL West team, it’s important,” said Giants first baseman Brandon Belt, who hit a first-inning, two-run homer Thursday.

Wikipedia article of the day for June 29, 2018

The Wikipedia article of the day for June 29, 2018 is Ice drilling . Ice drilling allows scientists studying glaciers and ice sheets to gain access beneath the ice, to take measurements along its interior, and to retrieve samples. Instruments in the bored holes can record temperature, pressure, speed, and direction of ice movement. Many different methods have been used since 1840, when the first scientific ice drilling expedition attempted to bore through the Unteraargletscher in the Alps. Two early methods were percussion, in which the ice is fractured and pulverized, and rotary drilling, a method often used in mineral exploration for rock drilling. In the 1940s, thermal drills that melt ice were developed, and jets of hot water or steam to bore through ice soon followed. A growing interest in ice cores, used for paleoclimatological research, led to the development of ice coring drills in the 1950s and 1960s, and there are now many different coring drills in use.
