Giants finalizing Andrew McCutchen trade to Yankees" Published on August 31, 2018 at 10:21AM by By John Shea The Giants, who have fallen from contention and have realized it’s time to look beyond 2018, are finalizing a deal to trade outfielder Andrew McCutchen to the Yankees for prospects, a major-league source said Thursday night. It’s believed the trade is contingent on medical reviews of the players. If the deal is consummated, it could open a roster spot for power-hitting prospect Chris Shaw, who has hit 24 home runs for Triple-A Sacramento. The deadline for contenders to acquire players and have them eligible for the postseason is 9 p.m. Friday. The Yankees, in second place in the American League East, will play a three-game series in Oakland beginning Monday. McCutchen, 31, is hitting .255 with a .357 on-base percentage and a .

SFGATE: Giants fall seven games out as win streak ends at four

Giants fall seven games out as win streak ends at four" Published on August 30, 2018 at 11:12AM by By Henry Schulman For four days and four wins, the Giants had their fun, talked of contending and got to whip out the bromide that “you never know what can happen.” By the end of their dreary 3-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at AT&T Park, Dereck Rodriguez’s first defeat since June 9, reality had smacked them in the face. They know what will happen. The Diamondbacks will start a four-game series that really means something in Los Angeles on Thursday night, while the Giants take a day off ahead of their three-game series against the Mets and lick yet another wound: a shoulder injury that sent rookie center fielder Steven Duggar to the disabled list.

SFGATE: Giants’ Steven Duggar out for season with shoulder injury, surgery recommended

Giants’ Steven Duggar out for season with shoulder injury, surgery recommended" Published on August 30, 2018 at 11:01AM by By Henry Schulman Center fielder Steven Duggar, the most dynamic position player the Giants have developed in years, sustained a dislocated left shoulder and torn labrum when he dived into second base in the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s win, the team learned Wednesday. The injuries will end his rookie season. Moreover, team doctors who provided the diagnosis after an MRI exam are recommending surgery to repair the labrum. Manager Bruce Bochy said Duggar will have to decide whether to have the operation, which likely would have him ready for the 2019 season.

SFGATE: Giants beat Arizona 1-0 on Gorkys Hernandez’s pinch-hit single in 9th

Giants beat Arizona 1-0 on Gorkys Hernandez’s pinch-hit single in 9th" Published on August 29, 2018 at 12:14PM by By John Shea Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey have been inseparable since 2010, one of baseball’s premier pitcher-catcher tandems and locker mates at the far end of the Giants’ clubhouse. On Tuesday night, Bumgarner took the mound to “Fire on the Mountain,” as usual, but with a new twist. He was the only player in uniform who had been part of all three of the Giants’ World Series championships. With Posey in Vail, Colo., recovering from Monday’s hip surgery, Bumgarner teamed with catcher Nick Hundley and pitched seven scoreless innings, repeatedly pitching in and out of trouble, in one of the most intense and memorable games of the season.

SFGATE: Bruce Bochy’s 9th-inning plans for Giants’ relievers, and where Mark Melancon fits in

Bruce Bochy’s 9th-inning plans for Giants’ relievers, and where Mark Melancon fits in" Published on August 29, 2018 at 11:03AM by By John Shea Mark Melancon is pitching more often and more effectively, and manager Bruce Bochy said he sees the right-hander becoming a full-time closer again. “I do,” Bochy said. “I think Mark’s getting a lot stronger with how he’s being able to bounce back and go back-to-back days. He’s got a lot of confidence with where his arm’s at now. Sometimes you have to get over that part of it when you have an arm injury. It looks like he’s over that now. He’s letting it go. I like where he’s at with his stuff.” Melancon had pronator surgery last fall, got a stem-cell injection in April and didn’t make his 2018 debut until June 3.

Giants get star turns from Duggar, Stratton to beat first-place D’backs" Published on August 28, 2018 at 11:05AM by By Henry Schulman Steven Duggar is 24. He has been in the major leagues for less than two months and just hit a two-run homer for the only runs in a late-August victory against the first-place team. Try telling him it made no difference for the Giants in the National League West race. “We really got it going the past couple of days,” Duggar said after he and Chris Stratton starred in Monday night’s 2-0 victory against the Diamondbacks. “It’s exciting to see. It’s a lot of fun showing up every day, especially with these guys. “If we can keep reeling off some wins, we might surprise some people.” And now, the splash of cold water: The Giants, who have won three in a row, are still a game below .

The Union County Sheriff's Department says Thursday another hunter found the man and drove to a nearby highway to get cellphone reception to call 911. Rescuers used a bucket truck and ladder to reach him. The La Grande Observer reports that the man's heart stopped beating about halfway through the rescue because blood flow that had been cut off to his lower body was suddenly restored. Rescuers were prepared for that possibility and had established a landing zone for a helicopter to airlift him to a local hospital.

Until early 2019, all three programs will stick around (in name only) as a new name and branding are finalized. That means there is time to launch one more Starwood credit card, and this time, it's one of the high-end luxury options that piles on the benefits for a higher fee than others. But, true frequent travelers, especially those who are Marriott Rewards loyalists, get benefits that more than pay for the fee.

Trump cancels pay raise due to federal workers" Published on August 31, 2018 at 06:29AM by By DARLENE SUPERVILLE, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is canceling pay raises due in January for most civilian federal employees, he informed Congress on Thursday, citing budget constraints. But the workers still could see a slightly smaller boost in their pay under a proposal lawmakers are considering. Trump said he was nixing a 2.1 percent across-the-board raise for most workers as well as separate locality pay increases averaging 25.7 percent. "We must maintain efforts to put our Nation on a fiscally sustainable course, and Federal agency budgets cannot sustain such increases," said Trump. The president last year signed a package of tax cuts that is forecast to add about $1.5 trillion to federal deficits over 10 years.
