For four days and four wins, the Giants had their fun, talked of contending and got to whip out the bromide that “you never know what can happen.” By the end of their dreary 3-1 loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night at AT&T Park, Dereck Rodriguez’s first defeat since June 9, reality had smacked them in the face. They know what will happen. The Diamondbacks will start a four-game series that really means something in Los Angeles on Thursday night, while the Giants take a day off ahead of their three-game series against the Mets and lick yet another wound: a shoulder injury that sent rookie center fielder Steven Duggar to the disabled list.
