The yellow-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus funereus) is a large cockatoo native to the south-east of Australia. It has a short crest on its head, its plumage is mostly brownish-black, and it has yellow cheek patches and a yellow tail band. The male has a black beak and pink eye-rings and the female has a bone-coloured beak and grey eye-rings. The cockatoos flap deeply and slowly in flight, and their loud wailing calls carry for long distances. They are found in forests from eastern Queensland to southeastern South Australia. Two subspecies are recognised, although Tasmanian and southern mainland populations may be a third. The cockatoos feed on wood-boring grubs and seeds. They nest in hollows in large trees, and although they remain common throughout much of their range, habitat fragmentation and loss of suitable trees has caused local population declines.
