Thorpe was acquitted on all charges, but the case, and the scandal, ended his political career. By the time of his death he was honoured for his record as an internationalist, a supporter of human r

Rabbi says gun 'miraculously jammed' in SoCal attack" Published on April 29, 2019 at 07:09AM by By AMY TAXIN and CHRISTOPHER WEBER, Associated Press POWAY, Calif. (AP) — In the minutes after the gunman fled the scene of a shooting that killed a woman inside a Southern California synagogue, a wounded Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein wrapped his bloodied hand in a prayer shawl, stood on a chair and addressed the panicked congregation, vowing to stay strong in the face of the deadly attack targeting his community. "We are a Jewish nation that will stand tall. We will not let anyone take us down. Terrorism like this will not take us down," Goldstein recalled telling his congregants after the gunfire erupted Saturday at Chabad of Poway. Congregant Lori Kaye, 60, was killed in the shooting, which injured Goldstein, 8-year-old Noya Dahan and her 34-year-old uncle, Almog Peretz, authorities said. Hours after the three wounded were released from hospitals, Goldstein described

My parents didn't tell me they skipped my vaccines. I got sick." Published on April 25, 2019 at 07:34PM by Josh Nerius, The Washington Post In May 2016, I'd been feeling sick for a few days. My doctor diagnosed strep and sent me home with antibiotics. But this wasn't like any strep I'd ever had before. My sore throat and fever kept getting worse, and I developed a rash on one of my arms. Then, one morning, I collapsed onto the floor of my apartment. The emergency room doctors took blood and ruled out strep. Maybe it was scarlet fever? Then someone thought to ask: Were you vaccinated against measles? In my haze, I realized that I wasn't sure. I texted my mother the question. She responded with a thumbs-down emoji. When, concerned, she asked why I wanted to know, I informed her that I was in the hospital. Measles was like the worst flu I'd ever had, combined with the worst hangover I'd ever had. It flattened me. Mentally, I was disoriented. I'd gon

Red carpet photos from White House Correspondents' Dinner" Published on April 29, 2019 at 12:54AM by Emily Heil and Helena Andrews-Dyer, The Washington Post WASHINGTON - Party on, Washington. In the end, it turned out that to have a good time, journalists didn't need all the menu extras that had come to define the glammed-up White House correspondents' dinner: the sexy Hollywood celebrities, the administration sources to schmooze or even a comedian to yuk it up. "Who needs 'em?" asked Jeff Ballou, an Al Jazeera editor, as he strode into the phalanx of pre-dinner cocktail soirees at the Washington Hilton on Saturday. "This should be about us." While President Donald Trump might have made a point of skipping the dinner (again) - and ordered members of his administration to do likewise - the weekend wasn't entirely devoid of this administration's fans. There were plenty of recognizable stars of the Trump Cinematic Universe at the weeke

Durant's 35 points carry Warriors past Rockets in Game 1" Published on April 29, 2019 at 05:23AM by By JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Steve Kerr saw his share of spectacular postseason performances playing alongside one of the greatest ever. "There was this guy named Michael, I can't remember his last name," the Golden State coach cracked in reference to former Bulls teammate Michael Jordan. Kevin Durant is having a superb postseason run of his own. Durant scored 35 points in outdueling James Harden and the Warriors held off the Houston Rockets 104-100 on Sunday in the opener of what is shaping up to be a sensational best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal. "When he's being as aggressive as he's been, I don't think there's anyone in the NBA, maybe the world who can stop him," Draymond Green said of the two-time reigning NBA Finals MVP. Houston's Chris Paul was ejected with 4.4 seconds left for a sec

Lillard time: Blazers guard continues to beat the odds" Published on April 29, 2019 at 04:04AM by By ANNE M. PETERSON, AP Sports Writer PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — After he made his unforgettable 3-pointer at the buzzer to clinch Portland's first-round series over Oklahoma City, Damian Lillard was mobbed by his teammates. The television camera moved into the scrum, and Lillard looked directly into the lens. His expression was pure told-you-so. "Obviously he can score the ball with the best of them. But Dame has a chip on his shoulder, and he has since the day he walked into this league," said Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green. "Just the way he grinds, he played like a guy from Oakland with a chip on his shoulder and a guy who has been doubted forever." The doubters don't bother the 6-foot-3 Lillard. They seem to motivate him, fuel his hunger to prove them wrong. He enters the NBA conference semifinals on a roll, as confident as ever. And it&

Wikipedia article of the day for April 28, 2019

The Wikipedia article of the day for April 28, 2019 is Thomas Crisp . Skipper Thomas Crisp (28 April 1876 – 15 August 1917) was a posthumous recipient of the Victoria Cross. A commercial fisherman operating from Lowestoft in Suffolk, England, Crisp joined the Royal Navy in 1915. He was killed in the North Sea defending his armed naval vessel, His Majesty's Smack Nelson, against an attack from a German submarine. The government used his self-sacrifice against long odds to bolster morale in the First World War during a difficult time for Britain, the summer and autumn of 1917, when the country was suffering heavy losses in the Battle of Passchendaele. His exploit was read aloud by David Lloyd George in the House of Commons and made headline news for nearly a week. After the war, a small display to his memory was set up in a Lowestoft library with parts of the sunken Nelson, which were dredged up years later, and a specially commissioned painting. This display was destroyed during th
