sprachbund , n : (linguistics) A group of languages sharing a number of areal features (similar grammar, vocabulary, etc.) which are primarily due to language contact rather than cognation. Russian linguist Nikolai Trubetzkoy, who coined the German word Sprachbund from which the English word is derived, was born on this day in 1890.
