armistice , n : A (short) cessation of combat; a ceasefire, a truce. A formal agreement, especially between nations, to end combat. Often in the form Armistice: short for Armistice Day (“November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice agreement to end World War I, commemorating the fallen of that War”). Today is the centenary of the armistice signed in 1918 that ended World War I.
