LOS ANGELES - Opening Day was not a happy time in one corner of the Giants clubhouse Thursday. There, closer Mark Melancon glumly explained that the flexor strain in his elbow that landed him on the 10-day disabled list has bothered him all spring and now prevents him from throwing even 30 feet without discomfort. Melancon's hopes of being a healthy and successful closer after surgery in September to repair a longstanding pronator injury, and making good on his four-year, $62 million contract, have vaporized. "It's just been a long year, a long calendar year, thinking that I'd be having plenty of time to get back to Opening Day today," Melancon said. "Not being available today is rough.
