LOS ANGELES — A half-dozen Giants stood in a circle around a team official staring at a cell phone. They were not watching cat videos on YouTube or monitoring the Tokyo stock exchange. They were examining a tweet from Stats Inc. that said second baseman Joe Panik just accomplished something with roughly the same statistical probability of a pterodactyl traveling to the 21st century and winning Wimbledon. Until Friday night, no major-league team had won back-to-back 1-0 games with the same player hitting a home run in each. Panik’s homer against Clayton Kershaw in the season opener was special.
