Here’s a story of a big-leaguer returning to his roots. Not just the region where he played ball. But the reason why he played ball. All kids who begin hitting, fielding and throwing do it for all the pure and principled reasons. Mostly because it’s a hoot. “I’ve been blessed in my career,” J.P. Howell said. “I just want to play right now, compete and get out with the fellas, play some hard ball, man.” Howell is 35, a year removed from pitching with the Blue Jays, three years removed from posting a 1.43 ERA in 65 outings with the Dodgers.
